Winter is Coming – Get Ready This Fall!

Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Preparing for winter weather means getting your home in tip-top shape before fall ends. Once the weather turns, rest assured you did everything possible to prepare for high winds, heavy precipitation, and anything else from Jack Frost. There are many fall home maintenance tips you can do right now to protect your home against the elements and improve your home along the way.

Conduct a Home Interior and Exterior Walkthrough

Start your winter home preparation by conducting a thorough walkthrough of your home and property. Begin inside, checking for drafts coming from your windows, doors, skylights, and power outlets. Consider whether it’s time to replace your old windows with newer, ENERGY STAR certified models. Fall is the best time to take on home improvement projects like door and window replacement for ideal energy optimization.

Then, check your chimney and water pipes for damage, especially if you plan to use the fireplace. Replace old pipes to prevent them from bursting during a cold front.

Next, inspect the exterior of your home. Check your deck for signs that it needs resealing, such as curled stain or sealant. Using water-repellant deck sealant helps protect against snow and ice. Check your roof, too. If you need roof replacement or repair, now is the time to schedule those services.

Schedule Winter Utility Service in Advance

Fall home maintenance tips aren’t complete without servicing your utility systems. Cold weather and frost can place a great strain on your utility system unless you include them in your winter home preparations. Contractors get busy in winter, so scheduling your service in advance guarantees your home is top priority.
