Want to Improve Curb Appeal? Fall is the Best Time to Prep Your Lawn
When it comes to treating your lawn, most of us think of seeding and aerating in the spring. But autumn preparations are just as important. Stuck on where to begin? Read on.
Start With Curb Appeal: Mow Your Lawn
Before aerating and seeding, mow your lawn to a height of 1½ to 2 inches. Once your lawn is mowed, rake the area thoroughly. This prepares the yard and enhances the property’s curb appeal.
Aerate the Area
Aerating does just what the name implies. It allows air to permeate the soil, loosening any compacted dirt and providing an opportunity for seeds to develop good roots in the soil. Aerating and seeding are particularly advantageous in the fall, since cooler temperatures allow your lawn to recover from the aeration.
Once your lawn is properly aerated, you can begin seeding. Follow these rough guidelines for the best cost vs. value lawn results:
- If your lawn is already thick with no bald spots, use two to four pounds per 1,000ft2.
- If your lawn has bare spots, use four to eight pounds per 1,000ft2.
- If your lawn requires a complete makeover, use 8 to 12 pounds per square foot.
Enjoy Your Lush Lawn and Enhanced Curb Appeal
The key to successfully seeding and aerating is knowing your type of grass. Obviously, you’ll want to use the same type of grass as your existing lawn, if possible. Lastly, continue to maintain your lawn to ensure the healthiest growth possible. Contact HB Services with your home improvement and curb appeal questions.
