Understand the Cost vs. Value of a Weather-Proof Home
As September ushers in cooler temperatures, it’s time to start thinking about making your house more energy efficient. Following these tips ensures your family stays cozy all winter.
Inspect Your Front Door for Drafts
Checking for drafts is one of the simplest ways to save money. To test, shake your doors and windows and listen for rattling. Any movement indicates an air leak. Sometimes, weather-stripping or caulking can fix these leaks. Other times, door or window replacement is the best option. A certified installer can make sure your house is draft-free.
Doors and windows are not the only places where drafts can develop. With a damp hand, check for airflow in the following locations:
- Electrical outlets and switch plates
- Dryer venting
- Cable TV and phone lines
- Wall or window-mounted air conditioners
Check Your Roof for Leaks
Checking your roof now can save you money later. Reviewing the health of your roof is a yearly autumn to-do that should be on everyone’s winter checklist. Examine your roof for cracked caulk, missing or broken shingles, or the presence of moss, which could indicate that the roof underneath is decaying. For a simple case of missing shingles, a DIY project can be an easy fix. In more extreme cases, more roof replacement or repair will be necessary.
Window and Siding Replacement
Windows and siding are another potential cause of drafts and energy loss. Like the front door, windows and siding should be checked for leaks. HB Services can help you with any of your winter weatherization projects. Feel free to contact us for more information.
