Insider Tips: Understanding Energy Star Ratings for Windows
Energy Star windows are certified to perform at levels meeting energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Homes with Energy Star windows receive a federal tax credit. Not every blue and yellow starred-sign you see on a pane of glass counts as Energy Star. Choosing the right window for you requires a bit of research if you have your heart set on the coveted Energy Star rating.
How Does a Window Receive the Energy Star Rating?
When considering energy-efficient windows, it’s important to know that some are more efficient than others. When you want your window replacement to receive the April tax credit, you need to understand how the Energy Star rating system works. The EPA gives Energy Star ratings to windows with the right scores in these categories:
- U-factor. Less heat escapes in the winter.
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. The amount of solar radiation the window allows inside.
- Visible transmittance. The amount of light the window allows to pass through.
- Air leakage. The amount of air the window allows to pass through.
- Condensation resistance. How much moisture a window allows to build up.
Windows with high scores will receive the Energy Star rating. These windows allow the home to run cleaner and cheaper, wasting less energy year-round. To learn more about the Energy Star rating, send your questions to HB Home Services. We’re happy to help.
