How to Tighten Up Your Home and Save Money
When the winter wind howls, you may begin to notice curious symptoms in and around your home. These telltale signs could signify an issue with your home’s insulation. Find out how to tighten up your home this winter.
Signs It’s Time to Tighten up Your Home
Fixing minor home issue can save on your utility bills. So what are the symptoms you should be looking for?
Snow Melting on Roof
Is the snowfall on your roof patchy? Do you have the largest icicles in the neighborhood? If so, you may have problems with attic insulation. Remember that heat rises; if you notice bald spots on your roof, it’s a pretty good indication that heat is escaping through your insulation. A contractor can repair these issues with cellulose fiber.
Check for Drafts
Addressing drafts around windows and doors is one of the most common ways you can tighten up your home. If you catch a cool breeze when you walk past your bay window or front entrance, you’re losing heat from a gap. You can weather strip the problem areas, but it might be time to invest in some quality new windows.
If weather stripping fails, try adding a draft stopper to your doorways. If you still notice a breeze, however, new doors make for an energy efficient investment. Although windows and doors are the most common areas for drafts, they’re not the only culprits. Check for them along electrical outlets and where fans attach to the ceiling.
