How to Preserve Energy in Your Home in the Winter Months
After the holidays, most of us are willing to use any opportunity to save some money. With a few preventive measures, you can cut costs and preserve energy in your home this winter.
A Guide to Preserving Energy in Your Home in the Winter Months
- Use natural heat. We may not see if often in the winter, but the sun offers natural heat that can help make your home toasty. Keep your curtains open and let the rays naturally warm your abode. Choose an insulating curtain and close them at night.
- Adjust your thermostat. You may like to keep your thermostat high, which is fine when you’re home or awake. When you leave the house, adjust it to a lower temperature.
- Check for drafts. Are you losing heat through your windows or doors? One of the easiest ways to preserve energy in your home in the winter months is to feel for a breeze. The most common places to lose heat are through entryways and large windows, but you may also be losing heat thanks to faulty roof insulation.
- Keep on top of maintenance. Like other areas of your home, your furnace and vents need to be checked occasionally to make sure they’re operating smoothly. Replace your furnace filter at least once every winter – more often if your family is allergy prone or you have pets.
