Helpful tips when adding a fence to your yard

FENCES

You have decided your yard needs a fence. But there are so many options, how do you choose the right one for your property? Here are some questions you may want to consider:

Why am I getting a fence? If it is for security or privacy then you want something tall, solid and locking. If the fence is for containing pets, then a chain link fence may do. If you're looking for curb appeal, then you might want to consider picket fencing, wrought iron, split rail, or decorative vinyl or aluminum.

How much do I want to spend? For fence budgeting purposes, remember to consider the number of end, corner and gateposts; number and size of gates for walkways or driveways; and number of times the fence changes direction. If you want to save money, focus on curb appeal in the front yard, and go with a simple chain link fence in the back.

What about climate and upkeep? In areas prone to cold, the fence posts will need to be 36 inches deep to keep them from splitting. Warm, damp climates are more conducive to vinyl materials than wood that can warp or rot.

Once you determine what YOU want, you need to think about your community. Are you blocking neighbors' views, or affecting tree or plant growth? Also look at neighborhood/homeowner's associations or local ordinances. Those organizations may have regulations on appearance, height, material, color, or distance from street, sidewalk or property lines. You may be required to get a building permit, too.

Lastly, designing, measuring, and installing a fence is hard work. Save yourself from posthole digging and misaligned gates by hiring a professional
