Gloomy to Glamorous Fireplace Renovations

Fireplaces offer a traditional, cozy way to heat your home and make your gathering spaces more comfortable. If you’re considering replacing your existing fireplace, think about renovating it instead. It’s a great way to enjoy the benefits of an upgrade without the added cost.

Option One: Paint

One of the simplest and most inexpensive DIY ways to transform your fireplace is by painting it. You can pick up a gallon of your favorite color and have the entire transformation finished in a weekend. Painting not only changes the appearance of the fireplace; it also protects the original surface from damage.
To complete this makeover, simply clean the entire surface with a degreaser/solvent. Use a stiff-bristled brush to get all the grout and other hard-to-reach areas. Sand down any particularly rough spots, let it dry, and add your color.

Option Two: Tile

Another great way to give your fireplace a facelift is by using stick-on tile. You can choose from countless colors, patterns, and materials to find something that suits your decor. Many hardware stores offer beautiful sheets that have pleasing designs and colors in repeating patterns.
This project does take a bit more skill, however, as you will need to apply grout in between the tiles. Most brands include easy-to-follow instructions to ensure you get the results you want. All you need is a weekend, but having an assistant makes the job even easier and faster.

Option Three: Building a Mantel

Whether your fireplace already has a mantel or not, you can build a new one to make it look the way you want. With a few pieces of lumber and some crown molding, it’s easy to take a plain fireplace and turn it into something truly unforgettable.
To finish the job, sketch out your plans, build and mount the mantel, then give it a coat of paint and you’re done!
