Fall Exterior Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn't Ignore
Autumn is a wonderful time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful foliage. It also means it’s time to do some basic maintenance on your home’s exterior. Be sure to check off this list of maintenance must-do’s before the chilly winter weather sets in.
Fall Outdoor Exterior Maintenance Checklist:
Take a Walk and Check for Peeling Paint
Check the paint on the outside of your home in early to late fall. Peeling paint means that it’s losing its ability to protect the siding of your home. Over the winter, this problem will only worsen. If you have peeling or bubbling paint, you may want to have your home repainted now, before the winter weather arrives and exacerbates existing damage.
Get Up There and Clean Your Gutters
One of the most important tasks for fall exterior maintenance is to clean out your gutters. All those leaves have to land somewhere, right? Leaves and other debris can build up in your gutter and clog it, which can cause ice dams and damage to the fascia. So get to cleaning, and add a few leaf screens while you’re at it. Gutter guards will make getting your home ready for winter much easier next year.
Keep Calm and Caulk Your Windows
Caulk and seal around windows now, before it gets cold. It will keep out those unpleasant drafts in the winter and save on energy costs. It will also prevent leaks on rainy days or when the snow starts to melt. Water that gets in through these cracks in the fall will freeze in the winter, which can lead to cracks in the infrastructure and mold problems. Doing this basic and inexpensive fall exterior maintenance now means you won’t have to worry about window replacement in the middle of winter.
