Excited About Winter? Certified Installers Recommend Doing These 2 Things Now
Before you light the first fire of the season, take some important safety precautions to protect your home this winter.
Check the Chimney and Any Need for Roof Replacement
Inspecting the chimney and roof visually is the best way to prepare your fireplace for its first use.
From the outside, look for bird’s nests and debris. Make sure the chimney’s mortar and bricks aren’t crumbling and that the chimney does not lean. Ensure that the flue is visible, and verify that your chimney rises at least two feet above your roof.
From the inside, look up the chimney column to confirm you can see daylight. Make sure the flue opens and shuts in a fluid motion. If you’re planning on using the fireplace at all, test that your carbon dioxide detectors are functional and fully powered. Should you notice any problems, contact certified installers for chimney repair or roof replacement.
Check Your Exposed Pipes
Checking your pipes is one of the most important things you can do to stay safe this season. Water expands while it freezes, so colder temperatures can cause pipes to burst without proper precautions. These include:
- Draining and storing hoses.
- Turning off the water supply.
- Draining water from sprinkler and swimming pool lines.
- Checking for uninsulated lines.
- Hiring an expert to insulate your pipes.
