5 Easy Steps to Secure Your Home While on Vacation
Ready for Vacation? Make Sure Your Home Is Ready Too
If you're venturing out on a vacation with the family this summer, make sure your house is properly prepped. There are several things you can do to protect your home and everything in it, including your utilities.
Adjust Your Thermostat
Air conditioning bills can quickly spiral out of control, especially if you're away on vacation. Before you leave, turn the thermostat up to 85 degrees. You're not going to be home anyway, so there is no need to keep your home cool. This temperature is safe for your plants, pets, and other items, and adjusting it can save you up to 2% on your energy bill!
Turn off Plumbing
Plumbing leaks can happen any time, regardless of the temperature outside. Shut off your plumbing to prevent leaks. If you're going to be gone for a month or more, ask a neighbor to run the water once a month to prevent accumulation of sewage gas.
Set Your Water Heater to Vacation Mode
Almost all new water heaters have this setting. It allows your water heater to run less often, so it doesn't utilize as much energy.
Mow Your Lawn
To burglars, an unkempt lawn is a dead giveaway that you're on vacation. Before you go, mow your lawn and do some yard maintenance to keep it in tip-top shape. Ask a neighbor to pitch in or hire a lawn service if you will be gone for more than a month.
Leave on a Light or Two
Even though it does cost energy, and therefore money, leaving a light on is a basic security measure. Additionally, let your neighbors know you're going away and leave emergency contact numbers with them.
